Roadside Assistance Insurance - What does it cover?
Roadside assistance insurance is a common term in our industry that means a roadside assistance plan. This is a type of insurance but does not fall under the traditional automobile insurance that is required to operate a motor vehicle within the United States.
Roadside assistance is a service that provides a support service to stranded vehicles that have suffered from a particular breakdown while driving or traveling. These breakdowns include but are not limited to the following
- Mechanical failure
- Dead or drained battery
- Keys lost or locked within the vehicle
- Vehicle has run out of gas
- Flat tire
The services offered in a roadside assistance plan do not fix these problems, rather, they provide a solution that allows you to move the vehicle to a repair facility or gets the vehicle running in order to get it to a repair facility.
For example:
If your vehicle suffers from a dead or drained battery then a roadside assistance service provider would arrive at the location of your vehicle and provide a jumpstart. Once the vehicle is running, the driver of the vehicle then needs to go directly to a battery service station and either replace the battery or fix the problem that caused it to drain completely.
In the example of a flat tire, the service provider would arrive and change the flat tire to a drivable spare, which would allow the driver of the vehicle to take the flat tire to a tire repair facility in order to get it replaced or repaired. Then the installation of the new or repaired tire would be the responsibility of the owner or driver of the vehicle.
Roadside assistance insurance covers only the services required to get your vehicle to a safe location in order to receive the required repairs.
Many who drive vehicles that are older or have higher mileages intend to purchase this style of program in order to save money on towing costs or to use the service in order to keep a broken vehicle on the road without providing the needed repairs. These types of vehicles end up needing back-to-back service calls and will inevitably be cancelled due to abuse or overuse. A good way to tell if you are buying a roadside assistance insurance plan for the right reasons is to ask yourself if you are buying it for the safety and peace of mind that it provides, or are you buying it to simply save money on towing?
If it is for the peace of mind then a plan like this can serve you for many years and provide a valuable service.
If it is to save money on your yearly towing expenses then this is not the plan for you. A better plan would be a payment plan for a newer vehicle that will not cause you so many problems with repairs and breakdowns.
